Option #1 - Full Day Introductory Training
Dogs in Practice: Therapeutic Agents & Assistive Technology Options

This one-day course is designed to introduce participants to the therapeutic use of dogs in healthcare practice, in community and educational settings.  In addition, participants will learn about the use of assistance dogs as potential assistive technology options.  This course content includes: 

  • Differentiation of pet therapy, animal assisted therapy and assistance dogs
  • Minimum standards for the training of human and dog therapy/educational teams
  • Overview of goal directed animal assisted therapeutic interventions
  • Differentiate types of assistance dogs and potential recipients
  • Minimum standards for assistance dogs and handlers
  • Case study presentations
  • Related research in both content areas will be introduced

Participants will leave the workshop with basic knowledge of minimum standards for use of a dog in the therapeutic, community or educational setting and with activity ideas that can be used immediately.  This course is appropriate for many disciplines including occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, behavior therapists, recreational therapists, social workers, educators, counselors, dog trainers, community service organizations and volunteer pet therapy providers.
