Full Day Therapeutic Agents AND Full Day Assistance Dogs as Assistive Technology Options

Dogs in Practice: Therapeutic Agents

The focus of this training is on animal assisted interventions using a dog in the healthcare practice, in community and educational settings, and for individuals and organizations interested in pet/social/animal assisted therapy activities.  Participants will leave this learning experience fully prepared to develop an animal assisted therapy program in a variety of settings.  Participants will be provided with in-service friendly handouts to train and incorporate colleagues into programming.

This workshop provides an in-depth training in the following content areas:

  • Differentiation of pet therapy, animal assisted therapy and assistance dogs
  • Description of the benefits of animal assisted activities with supporting research
  • Instruction on minimum standards of practice, liability and certification for a handler and dog therapy team
  • Specific goal related activities and case studies
  • Basic animal welfare issues
  • Outlines program proposal, implementation, evaluation and development, risks and liabilities, population considerations and precautions for both people and dogs
  • Resources and reference lists will be provided
  • Interactive demonstration and activity lab

Dogs in Practice: Assistance Dogs as Assistive Technology Options

This training provides an in depth workshop on the topic of Assistance Dogs as assistive technology options.  Participants leave this practical learning experience with the following knowledge:

  • Differentiation of pet therapy, animal assisted therapy and assistance dogs
  • Differentiate types of services that dogs can offer to people with both visible and invisible disabilities
  • Describe common client diagnosis and disabilities and which types of dogs can serve them
  • Identify & locate reputable assistance/service dog training organizations
  • Screening and/or evaluation of potential working dog recipients
  • Achieve competency in client advocacy and local and federal public laws that protect them
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge in funding
  • Case Studies (May include break out groups or evaluation of clients from local assistance dog training organization)
  • Local organization introduction/demonstrations/presentations if possible

Participants will leave this workshop fully prepared to give a mini-workshop to their staff, to screen clients for potential referral to assistance/service dog training organizations and with knowledge about local and national dog training organizations.
